For the 2016 election, the Library District has two (2) terms up for election representing the Town of Poughkeepsie and seven (7) candidates for those terms.  Each candidate was asked to provide a brief statement as to the reasons for their interest in serving on the library and they are provided below (listed by term and then alphabetical by candidate’s last name).

City of Poughkeepsie – 1 Trustee – 5 Year Term (1/1/2017 – 12/31/2021)

Edna Lyons; retired (NYS Office of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities – now OPWDD)

I have been a lifelong reader, and, I have an extensive history with the library beginning in elementary school when my greatest escape and adventure was the constant search for something new to read.

I was a weekend helper at the library when I was in middle school and maintained a strong love and belief in the programs at the library, specifically the summer reading program. I stacked books and read almost everything that passed through my hands. The library was integral to my interests and future academic successes.

I want to be in a trustee of the library because of what it meant to me as a youth growing up in the city of Poughkeepsie and of course what it means to me today. To be able to serve on its board as a trustee is a great commitment and I am committed to giving back to my community as a indication of my gratitude and belief in the importance of the library system. I want to know what issues affect management of the library and I always seek to generate interest in its new and ongoing programs.

Additionally, I am willing to commit to work on the board to insure compliance with the “library policies… set to govern the library.”

City of Poughkeepsie – 1 Trustee – Unexpired Term (1/1/2017 – 12/31/2019)

Fred Timm (announced write-in candidate); CPA/Owner of Timm and Popavero CPAs;  Financial Planner with John Hancock Investments

My name is Fred Timm and I have been a Trustee for the Poughkeepsie Public Library District for the past two years.  I am currently up for re-election this November 8th and excited to continue serving my community.  I am a long time resident of the area and know the importance that strong public library system can make on our community.  As a former educator and father of three, I cannot express enough the need to have books and other literacy programs available to our local residents.  Toddler Time, the Big Read Workshop, Computer Labs, ESL classes, and senior programs are just a few of the exciting things that our Director Tom Lawrence brings to our library.  As a Trustee I will work to ensure we continue to have such exciting programs available, and more.  As a CPA and financial planner I will continue fight for the funding to make it happen.  I look forward to another term as Trustee and the privilege to serve our community.
