All databases listed here are available at both Poughkeepsie Public Library District branch libraries.  However, remote access to some databases may be limited while others are available throughout the Mid-Hudson Library System. If you have an access problem and live in the Mid-Hudson region, but not in Poughkeepsie, you can find your local library’s home page, and look for the ‘Home Access’ logo.

Academic OneFile Select (Gale) – Resource for academic research includes scholarly journals and selected general interest titles in a wide variety of subjects.  Ideal for smaller academic libraries and high schools.

Advanced Placement (AP) Exam Resources – List of direct links to free study guides, practice tests, and books. – Find census, birth, marriage, death records and more. Remote Access has been extended through June 30, 2021 to Poughkeepsie Public Library District library account/cardholders working remotely, courtesy of ProQuest and its partner Ancestry.

Ancestry Education Resources – access to Nearly 500M National Archives Records and online tutorials and video courses. *This at home service is provided temporarily by Ancestry during the quarantine.

Britannica Academic Encyclopedia Online –  Includes Encyclopedia Britannica plus Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary, magazines and periodicals, and many other research tools.

Britannica Escolar – Accurate and age-appropriate content in Spanish for native Spanish speakers, bilingual students and students learning Spanish.

Available at two levels for students— Britannica Escolar Primeria  and Britannica Escolar Secundaria.

Computer Science (Gale OneFile) – Provides access to business and technical publications in the computer, electronics, and telecommunications industries.

CourseraNew Yorkers can Access Nearly 4,000 Online Free Courses and Certificate Programs on Coursera. Courses Focus on High-Growth and In-Demand Industries like Advanced Manufacturing, Tech, and Healthcare.

CQ Researcher – Timely social and political issues covered factually offering pro/con viewpoints on controversial topics. – provides free access to a wealth of driver-related resources, including: free online permit practice tests based on the actual contents of each State’s Driver Manual, driver’s training, frequently asked questions, latests official Driver’s Manuals. – unlimited access to the official state driver’s manuals, NY-specific DMV practice tests for car, motorcycle and commercial driver’s license (CDL), a DMV exam simulator, and a DMV-related FAQ.

Dutchess County Clerk Ancient Document Search – Explore digital images of 37,000 pages of eighteenth-century legal documents. These records comprise the oldest surviving manuscripts from the Dutchess County Court of Common Pleas and General Sessions, which began operation in 1721 through 1786 (document numbers 1-11400). These documents detail daily life in Dutchess County as seen through both civil and criminal cases that came before the judges and justices of the peace.

Elementary (Gale In Context) – Explores hundreds of fun topics and provides reliable facts for your grade-schooler.

Entrepreneurship (Gale) – Hundreds of full text subject-appropriate periodicals. The collection contains 10,231,146 articles updated daily. All articles have been published between 1980 and 2012.

ERIC – Education Journal articles, reports, conference papers and other materials, become indexed in ERIC through a formal review process.

Foundation Center – Non-profits can learn how to win more grants and make a bigger difference using this database.

General OneFile (Gale) – News and articles covering business, computers, current events, economics, education, environmental issues, health care, hobbies, humanities, law, literature and art, politics, science, social science, sports, technology, and many general interest topics. Gale Virtual Reference Library (GVRL) – A library of searchable electronic-format reference books covering biography, business, history, medicine, nations of the world, and science.

Historical New York Times – Online provides full text coverage of the New York Times from 1851 through 2005 and is searchable by keyword (“Titanic sinks”) or by date (April 16, 1912). Scroll through all related articles, or use the Page Map to view the entire page and navigate through the paper from first page to last. Offsite access limited to Poughkeepsie Public Library District residents.

Informe Académico (Gale OneFile) –  Spanish interface provides access to Spanish- and Portuguese-language scholarly journals both from and about Latin America.

JobNow – A database that will help you create a resume, hone your interview skills and search for jobs. Patrons can also take practice tests, chat with a live tutor or receive writing help.

LinkedIn Learning Pathways – (formerly is providing some free learning paths available during the pandemic. Note that a LinkedIn account is required to view the courses. That account can be created while accessing the free materials. Available through the end of 2021.
