Sadie Peterson Delaney at her graduation getting her Doctorate wearing a cap and gown

The Library District has announced an exciting new development that will further engage our community and honor a local hero. I invite you to join the effort to ensure its success.

In early 2021, an opportunity came along that was just too good to miss; a perfect space became available, the Library District signed a lease, and in February 2022, the Sadie Peterson Delaney African Roots Branch Library (SPD) will open at the Family Partnership Center on North Hamilton Street. Clearly, there’s quite a story here!

For several years now, the Library District has been looking for ways to improve access to library services in Poughkeepsie’s Northside neighborhoods that are cut off from our two other libraries due to the local traffic and transport topography. Early in 2021, the Center informed the Library District of an opportunity to partner with the Library Action Committee of the original library and to create a full-service branch to better serve Northside residents.

The Library District will honor Ms. Delaney (shown at left), a graduate of Poughkeepsie High School who received national acclaim for her work as head librarian at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Tuskegee, Alabama, by retaining the name of the original library. Ms. Delaney helped pioneer the use of bibliotherapy, which she defined as, “the treatment of patients through selected reading.” The original African Roots Library collection will be curated through a partnership between the Library Action Committee and the Library District and will offer opportunities to understand the African American experience both locally and across the diaspora.

The Library District has already secured funding for most of this project, but your support will help ensure that local families will see a beautiful library that reflects and enhances their community. Please send a generous gift today using the secure PayPal button below.

Sincerely,

George Mann
President of the Friends of Poughkeepsie Public Library District
