What are you reading? Me? I am working my way through a couple of books (I normally don’t like to read more than one book at a time).
First, I am reading The Boys in the Boat, a good read about the eight-boat that rowed to victory in the 1936 Berlin Olympics, much to Herr Hitler’s chagrin. There are lots of references to the Poughkeepsie Regatta, a national event that occurred in Poughkeepsie from 1895 to 1950. The historical link between Poughkeepsie and rowing is long and proud, which may explain why scholastic rowing is thriving in Dutchess County.
The second book on my nightstand is The Harbor Boys, a memoir by Hugo Hamilton, follows the author’s adolescence in 1960s Ireland. A child of an Irish father and a German mother, the author recounts his struggle for an identity that ignores the past and looks to the future. However, the sectarian “troubles” of Northern Ireland provide him with a daily reminder of who he is and not what he wants to be.
We here at the Library District hope you all are reading. If you would like, share it either here. We would all like some good reads.
