Online Resources & Databases

All databases listed here are available at both Poughkeepsie Public Library District branch libraries.  However, remote access to some databases may be limited– those are marked in blue, while others are available throughout the Mid-Hudson Library System. If you have an access problem and live in the Mid-Hudson region, but not in Poughkeepsie, you can find your local library’s home page, and look for the ‘Home Access’ logo.

Gale Encyclopedia of World Biography – Approximately 7,000 biographies in 24 volumes on notables from every part of the world and from all time periods.

Hudson Valley Reads – Subscribe to e-newsletters featuring the types of books you like to read.

Business Insights: Essentials – Company profiles, industry rankings, products, brands, stock prices. Contents can be retrieved with a Catalog Plus Articles search in a Catalog Search.

Gale Small Business Collection – Hundreds of full text subject-appropriate periodicals. The collection contains 10,231,146 articles updated daily. All articles have been published between 1980 and 2012.

Reference USA – A premier business and residential directory. Source a supplier, prepare for a job interview or do research on a company or business, see who your competitors are, and more. Offsite access limited to Poughkeepsie Public Library District residents.

Value Line Investment Survey – The premier tool to explore publicly traded stocks, with history and risk analysis. The PPLD subscription also includes access to the Mutual Funds Advisor. Offsite access limited to Poughkeepsie Public Library District Cardholders.

Gale Vocations & Careers – Finding the right career can be a daunting and high stakes task: finding an appropriate institution of learning, job searching, and maintaining a career are all topics covered by this collection, providing current and applicable content for all vocational milestones. Offering content from nearly 400 journals, this collection provides content from general career guides to highly specialized industry journals.

Job Express – Current job openings in New York State.

JobNow – A database that will help you create a resume, hone your interview skills and search for jobs. Patrons can also take practice tests, chat with a live tutor or receive writing help.

Consumer Reports Online — This is the full access to the official Consumer Reports subscription level Web product, including articles and product ratings.

HeritageQuest – Census records and other documents for genealogy and family research. Offsite access limited to Poughkeepsie Public Library District cardholders.

Ancestry.com – Find census, birth, marriage, death records and more. Onsite access only (both branches).

Newspapers.com -New York – Page image newspapers that are keyword searchable from many parts of New York State.  The Poughkeepsie Eagle News is available from November 30, 1861 – December 30, 1922 (with some coverage gaps).  Also included are the Kingston Daily Freeman (1873-1977), and the Middletown Herald and variant names (1894-1970s). Offsite access limited to Poughkeepsie Public Library District Cardholders.

CQ Researcher –  A database of in-depth, authoritative reports on a full range of political and social-policy issues extending back to 1923 — each report is footnoted and includes an overview, background section, chronology, bibliography and debate-style pro-con feature, plus tools to study the evolution of the topic over time. Offsite access limited to Poughkeepsie Public Library District residents.

Mango – Learn Spanish, English, French, Italian, German, Greek, or Russian the fun, interactive way – all on your own schedule, at your own pace, and wherever you want. Stop in the middle of a lesson and sign back in at a later point, Mango will keep track of everything for you.

Gale Literary Sources – Profiles and criticism of contemporary authors, contains LitFinder, Literature Resource Center and Literature Criticism Online. Offsite access limited to Poughkeepsie Public Library District residents.

GALE Academic OneFile – News are articles covering the sciences, technology, medicine, the arts, theology, literature and other subjects. Updated daily. Contents can be retrieved with a Catalog Plus Articles search in a Catalog Search.

GALE General OneFile – News and articles covering business, computers, current events, economics, education, environmental issues, health care, hobbies, humanities, law, literature and art, politics, science, social science, sports, technology, and many general interest topics. Historical New York Times – Online provides full text coverage of the New York Times from 1851 through 2005 and is searchable by keyword (“Titanic sinks”) or by date (April 16, 1912). Scroll through all related articles, or use the Page Map to view the entire page and navigate through the paper from first page to last. Offsite access limited to Poughkeepsie Public Library District residents.

Infotrac Newsstand – Full-text newspaper articles from newspapers across the country and around the world, including the New York Times (1985-present), the New York Post, The Daily News, the Albany Times Union and other newspapers.

Gale Virtual Reference Library (GVRL) – A library of searchable electronic-format reference books covering biography, business, history, medicine, nations of the world, and science.

Britannica Academic Encyclopedia Online –  Includes Encyclopedia Britannica plus Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary, magazines and periodicals, and many other research tools.

Salem Press Reference Titles —American Book of Days; Famous First Facts: Great Lives From History: Inventors & Inventions: Cyclopedia of Literary Characters

Britannica Escolar – Accurate and age-appropriate content in Spanish for native Spanish speakers, bilingual students and students learning Spanish.

Available at two levels for students— Britannica Escolar Primeria  and Britannica Escolar Secundaria.
