Ya te haces una idea. Cuando estamos atrapados en el tr\u00e1fico en medio del puente Franklin D. Roosevelt, \u00bfalguna vez nos tomamos el tiempo para considerar su historia? El puente tiene 90 a\u00f1os, despu\u00e9s de todo, y su construcci\u00f3n es una obra de considerable ingenio.<\/p>\n<p>Incluso cuando los autom\u00f3viles se popularizaron a principios del siglo XX, no exist\u00eda ning\u00fan puente que cruzara el Hudson entre Manhattan y Albany, aunque siempre se hab\u00eda deseado un proyecto de este tipo. En 1888 se termin\u00f3 de construir el puente del ferrocarril de Poughkeepsie, pero pronto qued\u00f3 claro que no ser\u00eda utilizado por el p\u00fablico, sino s\u00f3lo para el cruce de trenes. Ya en 1913, hubo esfuerzos liderados por pol\u00edticos y cl\u00e9rigos, como el Reverendo Monse\u00f1or Joseph F. Sheahan de la Iglesia de San Pedro, para conseguir que los propietarios del puente del ferrocarril a\u00f1adieran una pasarela peatonal. Estos planes nunca llegaron a materializarse (bueno, al menos no durante la vida de Monse\u00f1or). En 1922, la Asociaci\u00f3n del Puente del Hudson celebr\u00f3 reuniones con la esperanza de conseguir que la mayor\u00eda de los ciudadanos de la zona estuvieran de acuerdo en que hab\u00eda que crear un puente completamente nuevo para el tr\u00e1fico de veh\u00edculos y peatones.<\/p>\n<p>El 2 de junio de 1923 se firm\u00f3 una ley que permit\u00eda la construcci\u00f3n de un puente que abarcara desde Highland hasta Poughkeepsie. El importe se fij\u00f3 en no m\u00e1s de 5 millones de d\u00f3lares, con 200.000 d\u00f3lares adicionales para la topograf\u00eda y otros proyectos diversos. En 1924, los ingenieros elaboraron un informe detallado con dos muelles en el r\u00edo y tres vanos de 1.000 metros de longitud. Los planos fueron obra del ingeniero civil Ralph Modjeski, que ya hab\u00eda dise\u00f1ado una docena de puentes cuando se encarg\u00f3 del proyecto del Mid-Hudson. La construcci\u00f3n no comenz\u00f3 hasta 1925, ya que los capitanes de los barcos de vapor estaban preocupados por la ubicaci\u00f3n de los muelles cerca de los muelles de Poughkeepsie. La colocaci\u00f3n de la primera piedra tuvo lugar el 9 de octubre.<\/p>\n<p>La empresa constructora Scott Brothers de Rome, N.Y., gan\u00f3 la licitaci\u00f3n para la construcci\u00f3n del puente con su oferta de 484.570 d\u00f3lares. El coronel Frederick Stuart Greene, de la Oficina de Obras P\u00fablicas, se convirti\u00f3 en el superintendente del proyecto. Se esperaba que el puente estuviera terminado en 1928. Todo parec\u00eda ir bien hasta que a primera hora del 27 de julio de 1927 los trabajadores se dieron cuenta de que el caj\u00f3n oriental se estaba deslizando en el barro del lecho del r\u00edo y se inclinaba hacia abajo. Finalmente, se recurri\u00f3 a los ingenieros y \u00abla estructura se fue levantando poco a poco con poleas y dragados a lo largo de dos a\u00f1os, a raz\u00f3n de 18 pulgadas por d\u00eda\u00bb. Esto, por supuesto, se sum\u00f3 a la suma final del proyecto, cuya finalizaci\u00f3n cost\u00f3 algo menos de 6 millones de d\u00f3lares.<\/p>\n<p>El 25 de agosto de 1930, el ex gobernador Al Smith y el gobernador Franklin D. Roosevelt asistieron a la ceremonia de inauguraci\u00f3n del puente (v\u00e9ase la invitaci\u00f3n a la derecha). La Sra. Smith cort\u00f3 la cinta en el lado este, mientras que la Sra. Roosevelt lo hizo en el oeste. Durante las primeras horas de la inauguraci\u00f3n, hubo fiestas con fuegos artificiales y el p\u00fablico pudo cruzar el puente gratuitamente. Los autom\u00f3viles con una distancia entre ejes de 100 pulgadas costaban 0,80 c\u00e9ntimos. Los peatones costaban 0,15 c\u00e9ntimos, pero si ibas a caballo a la ciudad, te costaba 0,30 c\u00e9ntimos. El puente inform\u00f3 de que hab\u00eda ganado 2.000 d\u00f3lares en su primer d\u00eda de recaudaci\u00f3n. Desde entonces, se han realizado muchas mejoras y actualizaciones en el puente. En 1965, por ejemplo, se modific\u00f3 la carretera occidental del puente para que los conductores dejaran de girar tan bruscamente a la derecha al entrar en el condado de Ulster. Los acantilados de roca tuvieron que ser cortados para permitir el nuevo patr\u00f3n de tr\u00e1fico. El tablero principal del puente se sustituy\u00f3 a finales de la d\u00e9cada de 1980, y desde entonces se han llevado a cabo varios proyectos de pintura e instalaci\u00f3n de iluminaci\u00f3n.<\/p>\n<p>En 1994, el nombre del puente se cambi\u00f3 formalmente por el de \u00abPuente Franklin D. Roosevelt Mid-Hudson\u00bb para rendir homenaje al antiguo gobernador de Nueva York y residente local.
