I was born in Poughkeepsie and grew up using the Adriance Library. I raised my two sons using the Adriance as well as the former Arlington Branch. My library has been my saving grace my entire life. Today, I use it more than ever (both the Adriance and the Boardman branches). I have gotten to paricipate so much in my library and in my community, thanks to the PPLD! I have been to countless events…craft classes, author-talks, local history seminars, and museums. Krista Miller and Debora Shon are invaluable members of the PPLD, arranging so many events and welcoming us all so warmly when we arrive. And back in 2020, when the COVID Pandemic hit, PPLD didn’t abandon us. I spent many a Tuesday night, participating in virtual trivia with Krista Miller and my fellow library patrons. PPLD even made it possible for us to continue crafting, with kits that were pre-packaged for pick up and to complete at home. Poughkeepsie’s Big Read is a highlight for me, and long before streaming services hit the scene, so was the library’s DVD collection. More recently, I have loved walking in to the Adriance Branch to discover the community refrigerator that patrons stock for their fellow patrons experiencing hardship and hunger. I have met so many wonderful people along the way, and I’m the better person for it. I LOVE THE PPLD…always have, always will!

My favorite thing about the Poughkeepsie Public Library District are the history talks with Shannon Butler. We are so fortunate that the library provides a free way for the community to learn about the rich history of our wonderful city and surrounding areas. And not only is Shannon a wonderful speaker but she makes learning fun.

As a foster parent, my favorite thing about the Poughkeepsie Library is the way it supports me in that role. I am able to get museum passes to have activities to do with the kids, children’s books about foster care to open up conversations about feelings the kids may be having, and a tablet with educational kids’ games on it. The library has been a huge help for me in that way.

My favorite thing about the Poughkeepsie Public Library District is the Open Mic. I love going to Open Mic at the Library because it allows me to interact with people. I love to sing and I am so thankful that I found a Library that will allow me to sing a wide variety of songs. Debora Shon is an excellent host and her poetry is amazing to listen to.

We love all of the awesome kids’ programs and all of the “atypical” library access (MAP passes, library of things)!

The books that allow me to further my education. Study guides and SAT Test preps help a lot as a high school student and helps keep my grades up.

I LOVE the variety of classes offered, both in-person and virtual! Wonderful choices to choose from – good presenters. Krista Miller is very efficient and pleasant and even records classes so you can hear [them] again or if you missed it the first time. Shannon is amazing! So enthusiastic and knowledgeable – does her research. Love the Brain Games weekly meetings. Enjoy many other amenities ~ books, DVD’s, and the Rotunda, which offers so much for all ages.

Nancy

I like it’s variety and inclusivity.
