Grants (Funds) for Small Businesses
Here at the Library, we are often visited by would-be entrepreneurs who are looking for "grants" to finance and start their small businesses. True grants (from foundations) are made only to NON-PROFIT organizations. The sad truth is that there are VERY FEW true grant programs, which do not require repayment, available to profit-making entities. This guide will provide some resources to help you identify the various sources you can tap in order to get money to begin your small business project.

Online Databases
Use these resources to find magazine and newspaper articles about small business financing. Search in the following for the largest number of available magazine and newspaper articles, many in full-text, from which you can print, download, or e-mail to yourself or to friends and business partners.
One database that includes useful business articles is ProQuest, which allows users to search more than 6,000 periodicals, newspapers and other resources originating after 1985. It includes the ABI/Inform business and management database.
Look for additional databases in the Newspapers, Magazines, Journals section of the Online Databases page. Try keyword combinations like:
- • Small business financing
- • microloan programs
- • aid for small business
- • start-up costs
- • entrepreneurs and capital
- • venture capital
