History of the Poughkeepsie Public Library District Boardman Road Branch Library Andrew Boardman (1812-1881), once a prominent member of the New York Bar Association, was born in England, raised in New York City, and first studied medicine. With his second wife, Cordelia Yvelin, Andrew Boardman purchased a farm on the road between Spackenkill Road and Pudney Mills for a summer home shortly after the Civil War. He subsequently purchased numerous adjoining farms until he owned an estate of nearly 800 acres. Boardman named his estate Cliffdale and undertook many [...]

Local History Discussion: Germond Family Murders

Local History Discussion: Germond Family Murders This is your friendly reminder that if you haven’t signed up for our upcoming Local History Discussion on the Germond Family Murders of 1930, what are you waiting for (we’re running out of seats!)? On Wednesday, July 6th at 6:30 pm, we will be listening to Dr. Vincent Cookingham discuss his new book The Germond Family Murders: A Forensic Conclusion to a Cold Case. This case has been on the minds of many Dutchess County residents for nearly 90 years, and yet no one seemed to have the answer to the question “who did it?” until now. History of the Sadie Peterson Delaney African Roots Branch Library

History of the Poughkeepsie Public Library District Sadie Peterson Delaney African Roots Branch Library The Library District had been looking for ways to improve access to library services in Poughkeepsie’s Northside neighborhoods that are cut off from our two other libraries due to the local traffic and transport topography. Early in 2021, the Family Partnership Center informed the Library District of an opportunity to partner with the Library Action Committee to create a full-service branch to better serve Northside residents. The Family Partnership Center building was formerly Poughkeepsie High School, and later, Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic High School. The new library branch opened April 9, 2022 and occupies the same space that housed the schools’ libraries. The branch has a particular focus on early literacy [...]

There are references to April 1st being a day of fools that go back to the 12th century. The main goal of the day has always been playing tricks on people and otherwise making them look like fools. Searching through the newspapers, one can easily find tales of interesting pranks over the years, though not all of them worked out quite as planned. On April Fool’s Day in 1894, someone had spread a rumor in the Little Italy district near Dutchess Avenue that workers were needed at the bridge, and within “less than half an hour there were sixty Italians up at the bridge [...]
